Clear Web Archive

Notes on preserving small digital publications.

Preserve the source and the result

A browser-ready copy is convenient, while the original text and assets are easier to repair. Keeping both avoids an unnecessary choice.

Checksums detect quiet damage

A recorded digest cannot restore a file, but it can prove whether a later copy is identical and identify corruption before it spreads to backups.

Context belongs in the archive

Dates, authorship, licences and a short description explain what a group of files represents when folder names no longer feel obvious.

Test restoration on a clean machine

A backup is only a claim until it has been restored somewhere that does not depend on the original server or its hidden configuration.
